Abstract

The main purpose of this article is to identify the effects generated on education in the province of Maracaibo, from 1800-1830, and the relationship with its incorporation into the independence process in 1821, i.e. 11 years after the signing of the Minutes of Independence. Methodology was based on analysis of the 1811 and 1819 Constitutions, which show the contradictions between two visions of education in total opposition. This was so, given that they established the foundations of republican education for an independent Venezuela, while in the Province of Maracaibo, education continued to be sustained by loyalty to the Spanish monarchy. Even after Maracaibo's adhesion to independence, its entry into republican educational institutionality was slower, especially in the higher and scientific education contexts.
